Fort Bastiani is a nearly-forgotten defense placed in a mountain range that looks over a vast wasteland, the steppe of the novel’s title.

S As someone around here said, if it had been on any compulsory reading list, I would have skilfully avoided it, but since it was casually mentioned by one of my friends though I have the feeling it was on her compulsory reading list at uni I thought I’d give it a try.
It may even have benefited from that context, given that I, like its protagonist, was all but consumed by waiting. Dino Buzzati Traverso was an Italian novelist, short story writer, painter and poet, as well as a journalist for Corriere della Sera. The novel is vividly written but slow paced—not my favorite book this year, but a worthwhile read. And, to my knowledge, the few authors I actually read, one book each, unfortunately, are de Amicis, Svevo, Pirandello and Eco.
Forse l’ho letto in un periodo sbagliato in cui un corso degli eventi estremamente lento non era adatto.

I’m really pissed by my lack of reading Italian authors and I have no idea why this is happening. Quel livre impitoyable et magnifique! Nonetheless, I found this book much more tolerable than the depressing pessimism of Kafka and Beckett.
